Day-by-Day Itinerary
7-Day Fly-in Okavango Delta & Makgadikgadi
Set off on a seven-day journey through Botswana’s most striking landscapes, beginning in the surreal Makgadikgadi Pans and ending in the lush Okavango Delta. This off-the-grid safari takes you from the silence of ancient salt flats to the vibrant life of one of Africa’s most iconic wetlands.
Start in the Makgadikgadi, where shimmering pans stretch endlessly under vast skies, meerkats scurry at your feet, and baobab trees mark the passage of time. Then journey north to the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you’ll explore winding waterways by mokoro and track elephants, hippos, and rich birdlife through remote, private concessions.
-
Your Botswana adventure begins with your arrival at Maun Airport, followed by a scenic light aircraft flight into the heart of the Makgadikgadi, one of Africa’s most surreal and captivating landscapes. Once a vast prehistoric lake, the Makgadikgadi is now a remote expanse of salt pans, desert palms, and sweeping grasslands that transform dramatically with the seasons.
You’ll spend three nights at the legendary Jack’s Camp, a masterpiece of 1940s safari elegance set on the edge of the pans. With its opulent canvas suites, iconic tea tent, private museum, and palm-shaded pool pavilion, the camp offers both heritage and indulgence in the heart of the Kalahari. Days here are filled with unique experiences that reveal the soul of this ancient desert.
Walk with San Bushmen and learn traditional survival skills passed down for generations. Spend time with habituated meerkats as they emerge at sunrise. Explore the pans by 4x4 and on foot, visit Chapman’s Baobab, one of Africa’s oldest trees, and enjoy stargazing in a sky untouched by light pollution. In the dry season, the endless salt flats become a playground for quad biking adventures. During the green season, witness Africa’s second-largest zebra migration as herds cross the grasslands in search of fresh grazing.

LEARN ABOUT THE DESTINATIONS
Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is a rare natural wonder, a lush, inland oasis in the middle of Botswana’s dry Kalahari Desert. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s one of the few major river deltas that doesn’t flow into the sea. Instead, it spreads out into a maze of lagoons, channels, and islands, creating an ever-shifting paradise teeming with life. This unique ecosystem supports an astonishing concentration of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and some of the world’s most endangered species like the African wild dog. It’s not only vital for biodiversity but also deeply tied to the culture and livelihood of local communities. The Delta’s beauty and ecological importance make it one of Africa’s most treasured and protected landscapes.

When to go to Botswana?
-
For classic safari conditions and unparalleled wildlife encounters, Botswana shines brightest during its dry season. Imagine warm, sun-drenched days (22°C to 35°C) ideal for thrilling game drives, followed by crisp evenings under a breathtaking canopy of stars. This is also when the Okavango Delta reaches its peak magnificence. The floodwaters are at their highest, transforming the delta into a labyrinth of shimmering waterways and lush islands, creating the iconic channels and lagoons that define its beauty. Animals congregate around these life-giving water sources, making wildlife viewing exceptionally rewarding. Expect concentrated populations of elephants, lions, leopards, and a plethora of other fascinating creatures.
-
The shoulder season offer a delightful blend of pleasant weather, fewer fellow travelers, and excellent value. Temperatures are comfortable, and while you might experience an occasional light shower, the landscapes begin to transform, becoming lush and green. This is a wonderful time for birdwatching as migratory species arrive, and you'll often have more intimate encounters with wildlife due to the smaller crowds.
-
The green season (December to March), also known as the rainy season, unveils a different kind of magic. While occasional showers are part of the experience, they are usually short-lived and followed by sunshine. The landscape bursts into vibrant green, offering a stunning backdrop for your safari. This is the birthing season, a special time to witness newborn animals taking their first steps. Visitor numbers are at their lowest, providing a more exclusive and intimate experience with the wilderness. The dramatic skies and lush vegetation create incredible photographic opportunities, making it a photographer's dream. While game viewing might require a bit more patience as animals are more dispersed, the rewards are often unique and unforgettable.
